I’ve just read an article on CBC news which suggests that hiring someone to do the jobs you most hate doing can make you happier.
The research shows that if, for example, you hate ironing you could spend some money on an ironing service or a housekeeper. This would free up a big chunk of your time that you could use to do the things you really enjoy, to spend quality time with family and friends, etc. What the research also shows however is that whilst people understand the concept and agree with it, most people said they would be reluctant to spend their money on having someone else do their chores, mostly because they felt there was no reason they couldn’t do it themselves, even though they hated doing this thing and would likely put it off for as long as possible.
Have you ever thought about investing in a cleaner/gardener/ironing service or any other service that would give you back some time and take away the dread of doing something you dislike? Have you ever talked yourself out of it because you could do the job yourself even though you hate it? Personally I have a lady who cleans for me once a week and she is absolutely fantastic. I so look forward to going home when I know she has been in, my apartment sparkles!
Having my cleaner come once a week means that I can easily keep my apartment clean and tidy through the week and it frees up my time to do the things I love doing – at the moment I’m studying, I’ve started writing more regularly again and I’m growing a business. Not having to spend too much time on my household chores means I can focus more on these things.
What do you think? Have you outsourced any of your chores to free up your time and if you have, did you think it was worth it? Is it something you would consider in order to give you back more time to yourself?
